Why a texture repair shows, and how matching actually works

This is the part of my work I am fussiest about, and not because texture is interesting. On any drywall repair it is the part people notice when it goes wrong. A perfectly sound patch with the wrong texture on it announces itself from across the room, forever.

The textures you will actually have

• Orange peel. A fine spatter, left where it lands. Common on newer builds and the most forgiving to match.
• Knockdown. Sprayed on like orange peel, then flattened with a blade once it has begun to set. Everything rides on how heavy the spray was and how long the man waited before he came through with the knife. That is why no two houses are the same.
• Skip trowel. Put on and dragged by hand. The pattern carries whoever did it in it, the way handwriting does.
• Smooth. Nothing to hide behind at all, so the flatness of the repair has to be genuinely flat.

Why it is not just buying the right can

There is no product called Your Wall. Two houses with knockdown ceilings can look nothing alike because of spray pressure, tip size, how thin the mud was mixed, and how many seconds passed before the blade came through. Somebody stood on a ladder and made those calls, in a hurry, years ago. Matching means reading what he decided and then deciding it again.

So I practice. I mix, spray a board, knock it down, hold it against your wall, and adjust. Sometimes that is the first board and sometimes it is the fourth. Nobody has ever been impressed watching that part, and it is the whole difference between a repair you cannot find and one you can never stop seeing.

The part people forget

Texture and paint are one job, not two. A perfectly matched texture that gets spot-painted onto paint that has been up on that wall for eight years will still show, because everything around it has faded and your fresh patch has not.

On a small repair in a corner nobody looks at, spot-painting is usually fine, and I will say so rather than sell you a wall you do not need. On a feature wall, or anywhere with good side light, the honest answer is to cut in and roll the whole wall out to its corners. I will tell you which one your wall is before I start, not after you have seen it.
