The box says twenty minutes. Three hours and one missing cam-lock later, you know the truth. I assemble flat-pack and ready-to-build furniture the right way: square, level, tight, and anchored to the wall when it's a tip-over risk.

How I go about it

1. Check the box first

   Parts counted against the manual before anything is built, so a missing cam-lock is found at the start rather than three hours in.

2. Build it square

   Snugged in sequence and checked for square as it goes, not tightened flat on the floor and squared afterwards.

3. Level it in place

   Feet adjusted to the actual floor, because almost no floor is level and a rocking wardrobe wears its own joints out.

4. Anchor anything that can tip

   Dressers, tall bookcases and cribs go into a stud with the right anchor. It is a five-minute step and I never skip it.

5. Take the packaging away

   Boxes and polystyrene gone with me rather than left in your hallway.
